I thought I'd update here with some of the work we have in progress here in the Fairview Art Room!
The Kindergartners are excited to be painting in class! We studied the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milzahes and her brightly colored abstract paintings. Inspired by her vertical lines, the Kindergarteners have been painting some beautiful line designs on their papers.

In 3rd Grade, we're working diligently on our comic strips. This is a really fun lesson to start the school year and it gives me a great perspective on where the kids' drawing skills are at the moment. All the comic characters are of the students' own invention.
The 4th Graders are working on observational drawing, a la Claude Monet, using photography as a tool to help us frame interesting compositions on our pages. We've spent the last remaining nice days before the fall outside, observing our surroundings. This lesson is great for our Naturalist kiddos - they love exploring the physical world around them and framing it
6th Graders are currently working on personal symbol clay slab boxes, and will be finished by tomorrow, I think. We'll see how we progress today! In 7th grade, the students are practicing color mixing painting techniques and creating some really beautiful abstract color studies. In 8th grade, we're also working in clay, creating ceramic models for peace statues inspired by all the wonderful peace memorials I saw in Japan. I'm afraid I have no photos of those projects yet but I'll be posting them in the "Art Lessons" section of this site soon enough! It's a busy time in the art room!
